One other point to make is that you are not actually using
nifti_image_read_bricks(). That function would modify the
nim dimensions to match what you specified in the NBL. So
trying to read only 1 volume would have properly resulted
in nim->dim[4] being changed from 2 to 1.

In any case, nifti_image_load_bricks() now checks for
consistency. But still, using nifti_image_read_bricks()
would be better.
