Thanks for the answer, that works pretty well now.

Now for loading gzipped files. If i understand it right, the only thing i have to do is add a #define HAVE_ZLIB and the nifti_image_read() function will do the trick.

However that results in a
** ERROR: nifti_convert_nhdr2nim: bad dim[0]
** ERROR (nifti_image_read): cannot create nifti image from header....
