Note that you can use something like "-DHAVE_ZLIB" as
part of the make syntax, rather than modifying any of the
source files. It's up to you of course...

That is not a good error. Do you have nifti_tool compiled?
If so, what is the output of :

nifti_tool -disp_hdr -infiles FILE.nii.gz

(assuming your dataset is stored in FILE.nii.gz)?
