Hi Davide,
Just for the record, while NIfTI does not support that (being so
limited by the 348 byte header), GIfTI would. The NIfTI and GIfTI
groups are somewhat related. GIfTI datasets are XML-based.
GIfTI is a new format that is meant for surfaces, but which could
store a volume by basically the same means as NIfTI. It is much
more flexible and includes settings for sparse data storage. It is
currently supported by maybe 8 groups that work with surface data
(AFNI/SUMA, Caret, Freesurfer, BrainVoyager, BrainVisa, Vistrail,
to name only those with sample datasets available).
Maybe that is not what you want. But if you are interested, see the
