Rick-

Thanks for the reply. I tried it with a decompressed .nii file:

IDL> dlm_load, 'nifti'
% Loaded DLM: NIFTI.
IDL> print, nifti_ReadHeader('avg.nii')
ext = .hdr.gz
fname = avg.hdr.gz
nifti_fileexists(fname) = 0
** ERROR (nifti_image_read): failed to find header file for 'avg.hdr.gz'
Error:: FslReadHeader: error reading header information

what puzzles me is that nifti_fileexists() is returning 0 when the file is in the current working directory. Are there environment variables that need to be set? I am also not sure why when given 'avg.nii' as the filename it is looking for 'avg.hdr.gz' and then giving up.

Ron
