Use of the qform header field

In the figure below is shown how the qform field is intended to be used, i.e. for rigid body transformations. Rigid body transformations can be specified by rotation parameters. Rotation parameters can be represented by using quaternions. The figure depicts how a quaternion is constructed from rotation matrices.
