NIfTI-1 Support

Details of the timing and level of support for the NIfTI-1 format by software packages.

Most major software packages have agreed to fully support NIfTI-1 over the coming 1-2 years. This an important aspect of the NIfTI-1 format, and will facilitate interoperability between these packages. The details of the agreed support and the details of its timing can be found below:

  • AFNI
    • AFNI now supports input and output of NIfTI-1.1 files. This addition is fairly recent (09 Apr 2005), so there may still be some bugs.  More details on the level of support can be found here.
  • BrainVoyager
    • A converter plugin will be available for the next BrainVoyager QX release. More details can be found here.
  • FreeSurfer
  • FSL
    • FSL Version 3.2 (released October 2004) : supports full reading and writing of both NIfTI-1 and Analyze formats. Several features of the NIfTI-1 format are currently not supported, including qforms and left-handed ("neurologically-ordered") data. More details on the level of support can be found here.
  • MINC
    • MINC 1.4 (future release) : will support conversion to and from NIfTI-1. All MINC programs will still require that files be converted to MINC format before processing.
  • MIPAV
    • MIPAV now reads and writes 1 and 2 file NIfTI volumes.  More details on the level of support can be found here.
  • PLSgui
    • PLSgui provides limited NIFTI-1 support from early 2005 with tools for NIFTI
image in MATLAB, to load, save, make and view NIFTI images.  More details on the leve of support can be found here.
  • SPM
    • SPM5b (the beta release of SPM5) now supports input and output of NIfTI-1.1 files. This addition is fairly recent (May 2005), so there may still be some bugs. The SPM authors hope to include more extensive support of other NIFTI fields in the final SPM5 release. More details on the level of support can be found here.
